Current and future members of Congress from the Will County area congratulated former Vice President Joe Biden for his election to the presidency over Donald Trump.

Biden was projected to secure the necessary 270 Electoral College votes on Saturday after winning the states of Pennsylvania and Nevada, according to unofficial results from the Associated Press.

In their reactions to the election, Democratic representatives from the area focused on Biden's calls for unity in a nation that appears as divided as ever.

U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, said in a statement he was "looking forward to working with (President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris) to unite our nation and tackle the challenges we face."

U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood, D-Naperville, tweeted she looks forward to working with Biden and Harris to "push our country forward and bring Americans together."

U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs, pointed to a portion of Biden's acceptance speech in which he said he would be "an American president," even though he ran as a Democrat. The president-elect argued the American people wanted partisans in Washington to "cooperate."

"Americans should take heed," Lipinski said in a Facebook statement. "End demonization and begin cooperation."

Marie Newman, D-La Grange, who declared victory in her race to succeed Lipinski as the representative in the 3rd Congressional District, called Biden's election "monumental" and "historic."
