Will County area Democratic members of Congress criticized the Trump administration formally beginning the process of withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement.

U.S. Reps. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, and Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs, both decried the announcement this week. Both men said this step would harm the country's global image.

"This official step today of pulling out of the agreement is a continuation of the president's abdication of American leadership," Lipinski said in a statement.

Lipinski said when the administration first announced its intention to withdraw from the agreement, he "immediately called this decision short-sighted and damaging to our environment and economy."

Foster responded to a tweet by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announcing the formal withdrawal. Pompeo touted the country's record on reducing emissions, but Foster still voiced his opposition to the administration's stance.

"This is an incredibly reckless decision steeped in scientific ignorance, and it's a complete abdication of American leadership," Foster said in the tweet.
