Lipinski: Congress 'must act' after ACA decision (December 18, 2018)

The Herald-News

U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs, reacted to a federal judge’s ruling that the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as “Obamacare,” is unconstitutional, saying, “Congress must act to counter the judicial elimination” of the law.

“It is completely unacceptable to pull the rug out from so many relying on law for health care coverage,” Lipinski said in a statement.

He added that he cosponsored legislation so the House of Representatives can defend the law in court since President Donald Trump refused to do so.

“The ACA needs to be improved, not eliminated,” Lipinski said. “I will continue to work in this new Congress to give Americans better access to affordable health care.”

Joliet native A.J. Wilhelmi, the president and CEO of the Illinois Health and Hospital Association, also released a statement on the ruling.

“Illinois hospitals and health systems are extremely, deeply disappointed by the district court’s decision,” Wilhelmi said. “This ruling threatens access to health care coverage for 1 million Illinoisans who are benefiting from this landmark law, as well as jeopardizes the affordability of insurance for millions of Illinoisans with pre-existing conditions.”

Wilhelmi added that the ruling puts the progress made toward improving the health and well-being of Illinois residents at “real risk.” He also asked that the court’s decision be overturned on appeal.

“In the meantime, the Illinois Health and Hospital Association will continue to advocate for access to health care for all Illinoisans,” he said.
