Lipinski to Visit WINGS Domestic Violence Shelter

Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-3) will join Chicago Police Officer Gino Garcia for a site visit today at WINGS, Chicagoland’s largest anti-domestic violence non-profit. Garcia is a domestic violence survivor and victim advocate who joined Congressman Lipinski as his guest at last week’s State of the Union address.

Garcia’s mother, also a Chicago Police Officer, was killed by her boyfriend when Garcia was only 6. He followed in her footsteps and became a police officer in 2016 and now works with WINGS and other support networks to help victims whose lives have been disrupted by domestic violence.

“We continue to deal with issues of domestic violence, and we all too often see tragic examples of it,” Lipinski said. “I’m thankful for the team at WINGS and Officer Garcia who are out there trying to do something about it and provide relief to victims. I will continue to advocate on their behalf in Congress.”

Congressman Lipinski is a co-sponsor of the Violence Against Women Act, which expands juridical tools to combat violence against women, as well as other bills that helps victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Congressman Lipinski’s previous legislation to combat the problem of sexual assault in the military was included as an amendment to the 2014 National Defense Authorization Act and was signed into law.

Lipinski, Officer Garcia, and WINGS CEO Rebecca Darr will tour the facility, meet with WINGS clients, and share information about the impact of domestic violence.
