CTA Route #47 – 47th Street – Now Extended to the 59th Street Midway Transit Center (April 1, 2019)

The Archer Heights Civic Association is very pleased to announce that effective Sunday, March 31, 2019 CTA bus route #47 - 47th Street - has been extended seven blocks south from the terminus located at 5200 S. Cicero Avenue, to the Midway Airport Orange Line Transit Center located on 59th Street and Knox Avenue.

This extension, made possible through the efforts of the Civic Association and Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-3), will now afford CTA patrons who live in the homes on the residential blocks both east (Archer Heights) and west (Vittum Park) of Cicero Avenue, from 47th Street south to Archer, better access to the Orange Line terminal at Midway Airport.  A very significant improvement to Cicero Avenue traffic flow, vehicular safety and pedestrian foot traffic will occur as a result of this move. CTA busses will no longer block the three southbound and three northbound lanes when exiting the former 5200 S. Cicero terminus, which is located less than 250 feet from Archer Avenue.

The relocation of this bus terminus was spearheaded by the Archer Heights Civic Association in March of 2018, and subsequently became a high priority of the Gateway to Midway Committee. Congressman Lipinski convinced the CTA to take on the project. Both the Civic Association and the Committee are very grateful to Congressman Lipinski for his support in this very important matter.

“I’m pleased I was able to help the Archer Heights Civic Association make this request become a reality,” said Lipinski. “It’s a commonsense solution that will improve the flow of both vehicular and foot traffic as well as safety. Thanks to Tom Baliga and the Civic Association for bringing this matter to my attention and seeing it through.”
